On Tuesday, May 3, about 50 farmers arrived in Fontanelles to attend a conference on the theme “Landscape Contribution to the PDO Sector”, a regional union of the Dobs Harolger Regional Natural Park (PNR) and the Comtois Designation of Origin Cheese (Urfac).

Doubs Horloger PNR was created on September 4, 2021. It stretches from the canton of Montbanoit to the edge of the Pace de Montbelliard, bordering Switzerland on the east and Desubre Reservoir on the west.
Its vice-president, Giles Robert, announced his intention in the morning. “Of course, we want to preserve the landscapes of the regional natural park that we love, but above all, to make this park a place of exchange, a place of discussion among all the actors in the region.” Eric Favrea, President of Urfac (Regional Union of Cheese with Commodus Decision of Origin), took the floor to recall that the structure was originally set up to discuss cross-cutting issues involving the four Comtois cheese titles. Very quickly, biodiversity was a central issue. Since 2015, 50 dairy processing workshops have conducted biodiversity audits on the practices of dairy farmers. The results are then shared with environmental associations. A constructive dialogue between the actors will make it possible to gain real extra value for the region.

Water quality
Jagerémy Pourreau from Epage Doubs-Dessoubre presents the impact of agricultural activities on water. In the introduction, he warns: “I am only going to talk about agricultural practices because I am addressing an audience of farmers, but it is clear that other activities affect water.”
Jérémy Pourreau recalls the effects of high levels of phosphate and nitrate in waterways. When their rates are high, it contributes to the decline of invertebrate populations and promotes the development of algae, which is detrimental to aquatic biodiversity. However, the condition of the rivers may improve. Jérémy Pourreau explains that the development of currents avoids trampling of cattle. This habit makes it possible to close the aquifers that are responsible for their warming, which is a favorable condition for the spread of algae.
One practice cited by Jérémy Pourreau is the maintenance or planting of trees by water. Similarly, a given shade makes it possible to lower the water temperature. Also, root systems allow water to penetrate better into the soil, restoring its buffering capacity and improving groundwater recharge. An ideal shift in water quality and quantity management is a crucial issue in a region that has experienced severe droughts in recent years.

To remedy this, emphasis is placed on strengthening the buffering capacity of the soil. Epage recommends preserving existing reserves as much as possible, but also recommends restoration of wetlands, rivers, etc. Many solutions allow conservation, water infiltration or nitrogen absorption, for example by installing hedges.
The advice is well heard from the farmers present. FDSEA 25 Secretary General Florent Dornier testified as he noted that Dubs was the first linear division of the replanted hedges, in partnership with the French Nature Environment, the League for the Protection of Birds and the Hunting Federation. Awareness of farmers about climate change is very real due to their involvement with water agencies in paying for environmental services. Philip Monnet, president of FDSEA25, added that farmers’ use of cistern water should also be a topic of discussion in the PNR.
