Apple is presenting this week “to the developers” – but in reality to the whole world – the innovation promised by its new operating system, iOS 16 baptism. It should equip the future iPhone 14, expected in the fall, but most previous brands of smartphones (up to the iPhone 7). Detailed review.
1. A (finally) customizable lock screen
At Apple, it’s a “revolution”! Faced with countless more and more aggressive competitors, the Apple firm is forced to accept what works among others. From now on, the iPhone’s lock screen will be able to integrate widgets like alarms, weather, fitness data … or any other information (upcoming delivery, carpooling request, etc.) from one application.
Another long-awaited change: for the first time, there are plans to change the display of time, its appearance but the fonts used. Also, as with Apple, special care is taken for the aesthetics of the results.
The main theme of the image, for example, may appear in front of the time, when the background is … behind. To see if this rendering will be possible with any image, or only with the wallpaper provided by Apple.
2. Deleted and editable messages!
As is already possible in most messaging applications (WhatsApp, etc.), a message sent but not yet received or not received by the recipient may be corrected … or even deleted. However, it is sent from Apple with the “Message” application, and not as a simple SMS (with a green background on the iPhone).
Another “revolution”, perhaps to avoid, is the error of sending out, on the fringes, often funny but not always …
3. Search better in emails
Again, the features of Android include what Apple has long promised for the fall: The “mail” application should improve the relevance of search engine results. Analyzes the content of messages, but also attachments, links, contacts, etc. “Mail” promises to remind you – like Gmail – to reply to an e-mail you forgot, to schedule a delivery, or even to notify you of a missing attachment.
4. Live translated text
Thanks to “Artificial Intelligence”, the iOS 16 “Live Text” function will detect text in images and instantly translate it into the desired language, from any language, as Google Translate already does.
If iOS 16 asks to expand this possibility in video, it’s actually about doing it … with a break. In other words, on a static image.
Functionality will allow you to directly convert a currency or unit of measure, for example.
5. Separate the subject from an image
The function is more fun than anything else, but it’s fascinating: the latest version of Apple’s “Visual Search” allows you to select a part of an image – the subject of an image, for example – and “detach” from it. Background
The subject thus separated from its background can then be dragged and used in another application, such as a message.
6. CarPlay, a very (very?) Ambitious system
With its new CarPlay, iOS 16 offers a real complete ecosystem for automobiles, possibly replacing on-board car software entirely with multiscreen.
At the moment, the presentation captures the minds of viewers, as the possibilities offered are numerous and ambitious: CarPlay makes it possible to interact with the car’s audio system, control the vehicle’s temperature, display and manage fuel or oil levels, or even integrate the weather. Driving directly from the iPhone is not too far away.
But this new “revolution” assumed perfect compatibility with the vehicles first produced. This is a safe bet that the oldest will not benefit from it.
According to our colleagues at Numerama, several manufacturers have simply declined to comment, while others are rather skeptical, such as BMW: “Currently, we are focusing on improving our iDrive interface and as part of this development, we will continue to integrate Apple’s ecosystem.” We will evaluate how the announced innovations will be incorporated. In other words, today, it is not ready.
Volvo, for its part, on the one hand ensures that its future vehicles will be “compatible with the new generation of CarPlay” … while using the competition, with Android Automotive!
Apple has already seen itself in 2019, with iOS 13, closing the door to previous versions of CarPlay … In addition to close and complete collaboration with a car manufacturer, the whole experience seems out of reach.
7. Is a screen always on?
A customizable screen, more dynamic, scalable … but always on? According to the first evidence from developers who have accessed the beta version, Apple will integrate iOS 16 with its own version “Always on Display” which Android and / or Samsung users already know.
Clearly, the screen will permanently display specific information such as time, alarms and selected notifications. Usually on a black background, so as not to swallow too much. The function has been removed from the iPhone 13 Pro due to excessive use. But Apple could solve the problem by lowering the screen’s refresh rate to “sleep” mode, using OLED panels that only use power to turn on pixels.
8. Return control with “concentration”
Apple is well aware that the growing features are intrusive. Its “concentration” effectiveness, more powerful and more intuitive, makes it possible to limit the effects in principle. All of this is configured according to your needs, even on the locked screen, which can only display a selection of alerts and information.
It’s up to everyone to choose, then, if they need to be notified in real time of the weather or the arrival of an email …
9. Beware of the “Buy Now, Pay Later” function
Apple on Monday announced the entry into the buy-now-pay-after payment solution market, which has become very popular during the epidemic.
In the United States, beginning this fall, authorized users using the Apple Pay service will be able to pay for a purchase in four installments over a six-week period “without any interest or fees.”
The “Apple Pay Letter”, a new feature, “lets you easily see, track and pay”, explains the California Group’s press release.
The service will rely on the MasterCard network, but Apple has not specified which bank is responsible for the credits.
By capturing consumers by avoiding the interest of expensive credit cards, the Apple brand is already heading towards a violation that is well exploited by Efram, AfterPay or PayPal.
During the epidemic, many merchants have borne these costs, causing the costs to explode through such systems. Apple, which sells one of the world’s three smartphones, wants a share of the cake today
In the United States, authorities have already stated that they are “concerned” about potential debt savings, compliance with consumer protection laws and the use of data collected by companies providing these products.
With an estimated $ 5 billion market in 2021, it could reach $ 40 billion by 2030.
10. A release planned for the fall
The beta version of iOS 16 is already available to a small audience: it is accessible to developers at the time of registration.
The first public beta is expected to launch in July. The commercial version should be equipped with the future iPhone 14 and its possible variants (Mini, Pro, Max …), next fall. It will also be on future iPads.
11. Which phones will get iOS 16?
With the exception of the iPhone 14, most current devices should be able to update to the iOS 16 version. According to Apple, all iPhones from version 7 and all iPads from iPad Air 3 and iPad Mini 5 are concerned.
Here is the list of smartphones declared as compatible: iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro , iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone SE 2020, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XS, iPhone XR, iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 7.
