Since the beginning of the war

Ukrainian children hosted in Luxembourg are educated in both public and private institutions. The Ministry of Education has provided assistance during school holidays, as well as solutions for students at the end of secondary school.

Since the start of the war in their country, 1,273 Ukrainian students have been educated at Luxembourg institutions. This was indicated by the Minister of National Education, Childhood and Youth Affairs, Claude Maysh, during a visit to Leinster Lacy-International School, one of these schools, on Tuesday. Students are welcomed primarily at the Grand Duchy Public International School, but also at private institutions.

International or elementary school

Currently, “812 students are taught in English language reception classes, especially open to Ukrainian students. The choice of English was essential, as Ukrainian students learn it from their third year of study, “the ministry said.

Two scientists have shed light on how schools should take care of Ukrainian children and youth taking refuge in Luxembourg.

Then, when their level allows them, they can join a so-called “regular” class where they can add French or German language learning to their lessons. In some cases, when their level allows, some Ukrainian students join a regular international class directly.

In addition to these 812 young people, another 461 Ukrainian children under the age of 11 have attended elementary school where they follow a reception course in German or French. Of these, 111 are under 3 years of age, 117 are 4 or 5 years old and finally 233 are between 6 and 11 years old.

Online exams at the end of the secondary cycle

In parallel with these figures, the Ministry of National Education indicated that the solution would be for Ukrainian adolescents arriving at the end of secondary school. “They will be able to take part in an online test organized by the Ukrainian Ministry of Education in August or September, so that they have the opportunity to study at a Ukrainian university. The Ministry of National Education, Children and Youth will take care of the preparation and taking of exams (room, computer, supervision) on the premises of Lycée Michel Lucius. The exam will cover Ukrainian language, mathematics and history of Ukraine.

In addition, 49 Ukrainians have already registered to prepare for the Diploma in Access to Higher Education (DAES), which grants access to European higher education.

Holiday activity

Finally, another device will be activated for the holiday season: extracurricular activities to continue the “language and social communication practice of Ukrainian students” combining sports and art. The Commune’s Education and Reception Service, as well as the International Schools for the Education of Foreign Children (SECAM) will oversee these activities. Other structures such as youth centers or associations such as scouts may also offer activities for young Ukrainians.
