Milrem, a European leader in robotics and autonomous systems, recently shared a video showing an AI tank exploding in cars and other targets. The contractor said the tank, dubbed the Type-X, was designed to allow troops to “penetrate the enemy’s defensive positions with minimal risk.” It will provide troops with “firepower and tactical usability equal to or greater than units equipped with infantry vehicles”. Critics say the protests reflect a dystopian future of war.
As the international community struggles to find ways to control the development of lethal autonomous weapons systems (LAWS), drafts for such weapons continue to grow. The latest is the Type-X, an AI-powered robotic battle tank, built by Estonian Milrem Robotics and Konsberg Defense and Aerospace, a leading Norwegian defense and technology company. The autonomous, robotic tank was first unveiled in June 2021 and, as shown in the video below, the Type-X has just completed the first test firing of its Protector Ranged Tarot.
Equipped with a 30mm Bushmaster cannon, the Type-X is one of many payloads it can use, such as a 50mm cannon, an anti-tank missile and even a tethered drone. The tank can reach a maximum speed of 80 kilometers per hour on the Damar road. Milrem Robotics and Konsberg have partnered to develop the Nordic Robotics Wingman (NRW), a program that will serve as the foundation platform for the creation of RCVs (Robotic War Vehicles) to support large sizes of Type-X tanks and infantry vehicles. What about the Type-X autonomous system?
According to Milrem Robotics, the Type-X’s navigation and barrier detection systems are powered by artificial intelligence. The Type-X controller AI system has multiple functions, including tracking, waypoint navigation, and obstacle detection, but along with the Type-X, Milrem Robotics is also introducing a feature called Indirect Drive that allows remote control operations at high speeds. In addition, this unmanned RCV will be able to carry different types of payloads based on the same interface to meet the needs of multiple missions.
The Type-X has smaller volume and lower heat signature than conventional infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs). It can carry wireless communication relay fake communication module. Type-X sales are planned for the Nordic and Western European countries, but the United States is also keeping an eye on the technology. At least ten countries, including seven NATO members, have already ordered the Type-X platform. Paths are being made against lethal weapons powered by artificial intelligence, but their development is still ongoing, mainly in Israel, China, the United States and some European countries. Last July, a report revealed that Israel was using a swarm of autonomous drones to hunt and destroy Hamas without human intervention.
The U.S. military is working on semi-autonomous heavy robots equipped with missiles that will be tasked with performing some of the most dangerous tasks for the military. Meanwhile, the United Nations has failed in its latest attempt to establish mandatory international rules to ban the use of autonomous killer robots. The United Nations Convention on Specific Conventional Weapons again considered a ban on autonomous weapons at its last five-year review meeting in Geneva from December 13 to 17, 2021, but no consensus was reached.
Despite the rather obvious moral implications of an AI-powered system remotely taking care of “dirty work”, Millerm Robotics has raised significant funds from the European Commission to build an unmanned ground vehicle the size of a washing machine called THEMIS (Tracked Hybrid).
