Cineuropa: What attracted you to this project? Fly baby ?
Caroline Adrian : I have known Philip Polette-Willard for a long time and I really like his work and his novels. There is a poem, an inconsistency, and a sense of humor in the way he deals with difficult stories alone and with great generosity towards his character, avoiding over-reality. He focused mainly on writing and published four novels, but had previously made several short films. Mozart in the pickpocket Who had an incredible career, especially winning Caesar and the Oscars in 2008.

The story is Fly baby, A novel that he published in 2017 but which is quite strongly adapted for our film project, set in 1944 during World War II. It’s a story that’s close to the director’s heart because it’s more or less his mother’s story, although it’s clearly very fictional. Philip conducted a very thorough study of what happened at that time. The film’s character, Marie, a young girl whose mother has gone missing, is sent to her aunt in the north of France, on the border with Belgium, whom she does not know, a rather rude woman (to be explained). Nomi Lavovsky) Who was a nurse in the colony and who is considered a bit of a Moroccan witch in this village who is suffering the full loss of the war. Her aunt falls ill, Mary has to look for food to survive, and she finds a job in the kitchen of a German army barracks far away: in this extremely rough universe they can only reach her. Where local farmers have become quite friendless …

World War II has been covered a lot in movies, in all genres and in all tunes, so the idea is to go through the prism of this look of a child who has no patriotic outlook. The young German soldier who helps her try to bring some joy to life by placing the barracks in a cabaret during this difficult time and Mary becomes a kind of mascot. Outside of the poetic approach that separates Philippe Polette-Willard’s work, I find it interesting to revisit history with a less Manichaean perspective, to move away from the general view of the period with the French, the resistance fighters and allies against the Germans. , Paying more attention to men and their aspirations for heroism as opposed to women and children who are somewhat bailed out of all wars.

The scenario leads to the possibility of co-production.
Yes. We will have German actors in the cast, so a co-production with Germany will be completely normal. And the region in which the story takes place clearly refers to the possibility of co-production with Belgium. All with the idea of applying to Urimages then.

What Editorial line of Delant Production?
We’re an independent production company, so we work more from the heart with aspirations with filmmakers, rather than a specific editorial line. However, there is a clear connection between our films, especially the fact that outside of their forms, they are completely engraved in their time as we read the effectiveness of justice. An intimate suffix Or toxic masculinity and upbringing of boys A real man. Seen a little differently, maybe that’s the connection to our film. But it usually goes through the support of the writers and a personal tendency for the first films because I like the very strong need brought by their writers.

What are your other ongoing projects?
Its filming in late August I am not a hero Of Rudy MillsteinA comedy performed by Vincent Dedian, Geraldine Nakche, Anna Moglis, Isabel Nanti And Sam Carman. Among the other most advanced projects, I can mention Magnetic dream OfAurelian pylox (A former scientific researcher who went to La Femis) No doubt Benjamin Voisin And Izia Higelin On display and Nino Of Lu Zidi Which should be combined Emanuel Barkot And Philip Catherine But for which we are still cast for the lead role which will be an 18 year old girl.
