Euclid Satellite Integration Completed as Upcoming Transfers from Turin to Thales Alenia Space Ear Facilities
Thales Alenia Space, a joint venture between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%), has successfully completed all integration activities for the Euclid satellite at its site in Turin, Italy. The satellite will soon be transferred to the Thales Alenia space site in Cannes, where it will undergo a final environmental test before launching.
Euclid is a technological gem that will play a key role in the European Space Agency’s (ESA) ambitious scientific missions, contributing to several national space agencies, most notably the French (CNES) and Italian (ASI). This mission was designed to unravel the mysteries of dark energy and dark matter.

The Euclid satellite, for the first time in its launch configuration, is equipped with all its onboard subsystems and scientific instruments, the Visual Imager VIS (Visual Instrument) and the nearby Infrared Spectrometer NISP (Near Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer), both individually and integrated. In addition, the telescope, previously assembled at the Airbus Defense and Space Toulouse site, was inserted into service modules with solar panels and antennas.
Thales Alenia Space Italy is the main contractor for the Euclid mission and responsible for the satellite’s service modules, while leading an industry team consisting of more than 120 European partner companies.

Communication from Earth is 1.5 million kilometers
During his six-year mission, Euclid will map two billion galaxies and the corresponding Dark Matter 3D in the most observable sky outside our Milky Way. The entire study provided 150,000 high-definition images and associated chromatic and spectral information, or about petabytes of data to download.
Thanks to the K-band radio frequency data transmission system, this huge amount of data will be transmitted by satellite from its orbit around Lagrange Point L2 of the Sun-Earth system, 1.5 million kilometers from Earth. Industry contributions to the Euclid program

Thanks to the cold gas micro-thruster produced by Leonardo, ESA will be able to control the orientation of the satellite in orbit to correct the observation aspect. Data related to the telescope’s vision will also come from the Leonardo sensor: FGS (Fine Guidance Sensor). Mounted directly on the telescope, this ultra-accurate star tracker will ensure absolute alignment between the telescope axis and the reference star. Leonardo is also supplying solar panels that will power all on-board systems.
Euclid’s large grain-placeable and steerable K-band antennas benefit from the unique expertise of the Thales Alenia space in Italy in space exploration missions such as Cassini-Hygens (Saturn), Bepiclombo (Mercury) and Exomers (Mars). Italy’s Thales Alenia Space also supplied the X-band DST transponder, while Belgium’s Thales Alenia Space X and K built the Traveling Wave Tube Amplifier (TWTA).
