The Board of Directors of the African Regional Center for Space Science and Technology for the French Language (CRASTE-LF) affiliated to the United Nations held its 10th General Session on Thursday, June 30, 2022 under the co-chair of the Moroccan Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation, Abdelatif Mirawi and his opponent from Niger, Jibo Mamudu.
This Board Order was originally dedicated to the presentation of CRASTE-LF’s activities and results to the 9th General Session of the Board of Directors and its actions by video conference on June 8, 2020 for the fiscal years 2020 and 2021. Plan and its budget under the biennial program for the years 2022 and 2023.
Initiating the session, the Moroccan Minister highlighted the importance of space technology, which he said “constitutes an essential tool for solving many development problems that challenge our countries, especially economically and environmentally, where data collected by satellites, for example, sustainable human It can promote people’s informed policy choices in key areas of development. “
He added that Morocco, fully aware of the importance of these technologies and the need to combine them for development purposes, has taken many initiatives, most notably the creation of the Royal Center for Special Remote Sensing in 1989, launching two Earth observation satellites (Mohammed VI-A and Mohammed VI- B) which guarantees autonomous access to spatial information for precise images obtained every 3 days with a spatial resolution of 50 cm.
Government officials recall that the Kingdom is actively working to promote cooperation in space science and technology, with a special interest for African countries, focusing on South-South cooperation, which is a lever without conflict to accelerate the development of the continent.
Indeed, for more than 23 years of existence, the Center has enabled its member states to provide high-level expertise cooperation and training in space science and technology. For example, CRASTE-LF has trained more than 400 skills at Masters level in 4 options: Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems, Satellite Meteorology and Global Climate, Satellite Telecommunications and Global Satellite Navigation Systems.
CRASTE-LF has enabled more than 3,000 participants from 61 countries to take advantage of its short-term training, which takes the form of limited technical workshops for experts and conferences and seminars open to a wide audience.
Representatives of the African states, members of CRASTE-LF, paid special attention at this meeting to find appropriate solutions to strengthen CRASTE-LF’s role and expand its scope of action.
This 10th session was marked by the signing of a partnership agreement between CRASTE-LF and Moroccan and African organizations, specifically a partnership agreement with the Moroccan Agency for International Cooperation, the Moroccan Meteorological Department, the National Office for Social and Social Affairs. The Cultural University Works (ONOUSC), the Virtual University of C কোte d’Ivoire (UVCI) and the Office of the Support Program for Satellite Navigation in Africa SatNav Africa Joint Program Office (JPO) are located in Senegal.
Located in Rabat, CRASTE-LF, headquartered in Rabat, is one of six UN-approved regional centers worldwide. Its goal is to build capabilities in space technology in the French-speaking African region.
It benefits from affiliation with the United Nations through the Office of Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and is involved with key players globally, particularly the International Committee on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (ICG) and the Committee on the Peaceful Use of Outer. Space (COPUOS).
