Education in the family, education without school

Their names are Jeïdy, Kyéta, Shanty, Mélusine Or even Cerberus. They are between the ages of 7 and 14 and have never been to school Their parents chose to do their education in the family outside the so-called Scriptural education system. In France, if education is compulsory for children between the ages of 3 and 16, parents may not send them to school.

However, the freedom of this choice is questionable. As of August 2021, a request for approval for the right not to send your child to school is required, and it is no longer easy. “Family Education Statement”. Also, acceptance criteria have been tightened: children’s legal guardians must prove their availability or even have a bachelor’s degree. You need a reason “Valid” -From the point of view of the institution- Leaving school. As a result, the French state, from the beginning of the 2022 school year, will be able to reject requests from families.

Who are these families who have chosen education outside of school? How do they view education, instruction, and its challenges? How do their children develop socialization without a playground? How do parents organize themselves and make their days dynamic? How do they react to changes in the rules imposed on them by the state? Over the past few months, as a documentary photographer, I have been meeting with this family on French soil to try to answer these questions.
